The Original Craftsman: A Big Serving of Pot Luck
Nurtured in the nursery and landscape business, Rodney spent his youth working with his mother, stepfather and elder brother in the family enterprise: The Martin Plant Farm, located in the beautiful Hill Country of Texas.
In his twenties he learned the construction business and quickly progressed to construction manager, where he organized and supervised major building projects for locations in Texas and across the American southwest.
In 1993, fate took a hand. Fred Pottinger, now retired but at the time the owner of San Antonio’s most unique art, antique and architectural design gallery—Horse of a Different Color—asked Rodney if he could come up with an idea for creating outdoor pots that would withstand the ravages of time and weather. Fed up with the “fine” Mexican clay pots, which were beautiful for only a limited period and eventually deteriorated—“going back to the earth,”—Fred challenged Rodney to fix the problem.
In his workshop in Pipe Creek, Rodney began experimenting. Using a sheet of lath, he hand-fashioned his first pot (the Phoenix), and then began working with concrete mixes. After extensive research and much trial and error, he developed a formula (a unique concoction that remains a deeply guarded secret). Initially believing it a good idea to mix color into the wet concrete, after a time Rodney revised the process and developed a topical coloring technique.
Every step of the creative process is accomplished by hand—from the steel framing to the lath to carving and etching, as well as to applying multiple layers of color, the burnishing and the finish.
Rodney guarantees his finely sculptured creations will last a lifetime. He says: “They are heirloom pieces that will endure through many generations. If one of my pots falls off the truck, it’s the highway that will be damaged, not the pot.”
Recently he has added other concrete-designed products to his repertoire, including freestanding fire pits, exquisite outdoor dining tables, latticed light fixtures and Adirondack-styled outdoor furniture. Rodney's game plan is to keep expanding his artistic vision, and his clients keep coming back for more.
